Sorry about all the pictures! We've been hunting private land in Virginia for the last few weeks and we've pulled up a lot of iron in the farm house area and the fields. We've pulled up a lot of civil war items in the fields. Any ideas on what some of this stuff is? Anything civil war era? Anything of value?
Thanks in advance for your help! HH!

First item is the back half of a 19th century padlock. Second item is a leg or foot from a cast iron cook pot.

The other items are typical farm related iron, spanning a century or so. Some can pre-date the Civil War, and some can date decades later. A few items in photos 3 and 4, appear to be 20th century in my eyes.

Saving most everything, and posting photos here is a great way to learn what you are digging. :)

I know you been hunting your civil war camp down there towards Richmond. I want too say if you dig a bunch of Civil War Iron in the same small area that is a indication it could be a cw trash pit or hut site. If you get a bunch of iron signals all in the same small area dig into it and see if you hit any ash, brick, pottery, glass, etc. Once you get the iron out of the hole dig the hole out about 6-12 inches deep and stick your detector head in the hole and see if you get anymore signals.

I just started digging and my property is loaded with iron. A lot of it looks like yours plus tractor and wagon parts. I suggest next time you put a quarter in your picture for size reference. My first day out I found a trap, probably for squirrel. From that moment on I was hooked. Happy hunting!
