love silver but question on nickels

I love to find silver but I have a question about nickels.
I have been searching nickels but only to try to fill out a Jefferson nickel board, still need about 10 "D"s from the 40's and 50's. I knew that it is illegal to melt pennies for the metal content but just saw something that said that the same holds true for nickels. Is that true? I also saw that they may be changing the composition of the nickel to nickel plated zinc, like the penny, any truth?

If they change the composition it will drive the "good" nickels off the market I would assume, right?

I have heard of some people saving coins from before 1950, is there any real reason to do that?

I take everything 61 down mainly as my whitman folders are 38 thru 61. 7 holes and 13 holes in those folders. Probably have 100.00 face in 38 thru 61 in my collection now. Don't know if it'll be worth it, may sell them on ebay as starter sets or something. Was offered 2.40 a roll at one store, I decided against it.
