"Lucifer" Brick

Hi there! I recently found a brick on the shoreline of Brooklyn New York. It's pretty creepy but interesting nonetheless. If anyone has any information on this brick it would be greatly appreciated. I have been researching it online and have not been able to find anything related. Thanks!

Wow! I hadn't thought of that. Have you seen other examples or anything else like this? It does not look engraved but rather like the brick was made with the letters in the mold. I could be wrong about this but that's what it looks like to me. I guess I'm just curious if there was a common practice of making markers like this for a pet. Or if you've ever seen anything like it before. Thank you very much!

That was my first thought as well. My parents have a couple very similar to this one in their backyard for their dogs. They ordered them online a while back.

Hah, great brick! It looks like a refractory brick (firebrick), and searching around I found a company called Lucifer Furnaces that's been around 65 years which may be related, though "Lucifer" as a brand name for bricks made to withstand extreme heat probably wasn't a huge creative leap and lacking documentation it could have come from one of many manufacturers. I definitely would have grabbed it too!

I found Lucifer Matches Advertised in the Early 1800's

But Not a Lucifer Brick Co Yet.
It may have come over from Europe.

Right, the Lucifer matches were mentioned in Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.
