duh...duh... DFX
Today was this year's first lunchtime hunt for me. I returned with my DFX to an area where last year I had dug a 1792 Irish Half Penny, silver thimble. musketballs and pewter spoons.
I found an old looking bullet, a small part from ?? mechanical device and two what look to be Colonial Era buttons in the same hole.
I know I have seen this button design somewhere...PBK...where are ya man?

Way to go Dan. Nice find there. I still can't get older that a 1917 wheat. :(

Nice stuff!!!

Those buttons and Silver Thimbles are great.
I myself have only found a few IH's.

Keep on that spot. I can picture a LC being pulled out of that area very soon..

Nice recovery on the IH. Fun to find even if they look bad. ;D

I might have to start my own Lunchtime hunt series....

My mind is full of visions of the energizer bunny swinging a detector and awsome finds poping out left and right.Keep the post alive, get back there :o :o :o.
Nice interesting assortment of finds there, must be a mystery to solve.

Energizer Bunny????? :D :D :D ???

And trust me, this area is not what I would call a "target rich environment"...most times I hunt here I only dig a half dozen holes. The oldest map I can find of the area (1840s) shows nothing there at all.

Re: :unchtime hunts for March-updated 3/14-silver clip

It was pouring rain so hardthat I was sure I would have to pass on my hunt today. Eventually right before noon it stopped, so off I went.

What a soupy mess. I forgot my root saw and that cost me valuable time retrieving the few targets I thought worth digging.

Total finds included part of an axe head, old hammer head (it looks like to me), a weird fish-shaped thing (maybe clock hand?) and a solid silver clip-thingy with a beautiful ornate design on it.

A few feet from where I park I picked up a wheatie.

Hey Dananimal he just keeps going and going. ;D Nice finds. The small silver thing looks like a dress clip [if its hinged] ,otherwise maybe a page marker. The possible clock hand also might be a swing cover for a lock on a box [if the top is snapped off].
They all seem like a ton of finds when your staring at 2 feet of snow & ice. :'(
Happy Hunting Bud ;D

Nice finds Dan.

The Dfx is one bad boy of a detector

Here's a better closeup of the clip cleaned. I trid to locate the date, etc based upon the "H" inside the triangle maker's mark, but all I could find were other people trying to do the same thing. One site said they thought it was early American, which fits with the other items found here.
Note the "PATENT" stamp on the other item.

Nice silver clip recovery, bud! Good luck on your future hunts!

Re: Lunchtime hunts for March-updated 3/14-silver clip

Definately a swing plate from a lock either on a trunk or old railroad style lock, and the silver clip, the triangle mark looks like it contains an S instead of an H.If I am seeing right a S could be Sinclair Mfg Co. from Chartley Mass C1950

I'll get a better pic up of that mark...it's def. an "H"

Re: Lunchtime hunts for March-updated 3/14-silver clip

Agreed: the "clock hand" is the drop (keyhole cover) from an old padlock— and almost certainly a wrought iron lever lock of the type commonly referred to as a "smokehouse lock" or "smokie."

The sterling silver item appears to be a bookmark. I'm pretty sure that the "H in triangle" mark is that of the F. A. Hermann Co. of Melrose Highlands, MA, founded in 1908; they moved to Framingham, MA in 1977. At any rate, here's a fairly similar one with the same mark:

Those are two more excellent finds. Very unique and cool items. Those are the type of things I like finding. Much better than a seated dime. ;) I am being serious. Coins are great but relics talk to you about a person's life.

Very well said. There are some very cool relics out there to be found, and history to go with them.
I would love to find some old U.S. coins. I haven't gotten past 1917 yet. :(
When it gets into other coins like silver reales (spelling?), I don't know a silver reale from a fishing reel. ;D I'm learning though.

Dan,
Those two pieces cleaned up great. Congrats on the finds. Damn, no clad though. :(

Re: Lunchtime hunts for March-updated 3/16-cool whatsit??

Got out again yesterday to the area where all this older stuff has been scattered and this time hunted a section of woods that I have avoided because of so much fallen timber. It makes it difficult at best to swing a coil there, so I spent most of my time lifting branches and kicking detritus aside.
Ended up with a cool old unfired rifle shell, some shotgun shells (again, look old, were deep and crusty green) a fired musketball, a square nail that isn't completely rotted away and a real nice vintage whatsit....again, I call upon PBK for his expertise. My son said it looks like a trigger for a gun.

Total finds for yesterday afternoon

Rifle round is cool. Gun trigger? Could very well be. If so it would be from an older gun I'm sure.

The whatsit looks like a handle to me but not sure what such a small handle would be on..
