This advertising token was found (by member "Ralph in Upstate NY") about 4 inches underground.

It's 1 1/4 inches in diameter. Has a hefty feel to it. Seems to be made of steel, originally painted black. Corroded now where the paint has deteriorated. [Picture 1 is for size. Picture 2 is both sides. Picture 3 is my sketch of the lettering on the coin.]

Would very much like to know the point of this token. Was it part of a promotional game? How did it work?

I googled "Magic Chef promotional Coin" but found only some info on collectible banks.

Re: Magic Chef Token--What was the purpose?

It is called a spinner token. Salespeople back then would meet their clients for lunch. They would pull out the token, spin it on the table, and the person that the arrow pointed to would pick up the tab. Just a fun way to establish sales/client relationships.

Cool. Thanks creskol, I didn't know that.

Hmmm... I'm thinking now that it doesn't make sense for it to be painted black. It should have looked golden. Maybe it was coated with some kind of gilding or paint that turned black over the time that the item was underground....?
