Live in Cincinnati Ohio and am recovering from surgery right now so I thought it was a good time to go magnet fishing. I found an old lock this is the 2nd one of this brand that Iv found all year, a lot of nails and bolts, I kept a nail and some kind of screw because I thought maybe I could find whatever they go to they seemed old to me, a rock I thought might be a meteorite, 9mm casing and a bottle cap, machete blade or some other blade, railroad stake, belt buckle, filing cabinet lock and a hinge (that's what kinda lock I think It is), plow, a door knob and some kind of gear

That gear is actually the flywheel off an engine that someone more that likely used as a trot line anchor. Nice finds, I've never been magnet fishing bit I think I'll try it soon.

at a neat idea! I think I'll try magnet fishing in a old lake that I spent my summers at as a child the next time I go up to Indiana.

Thanks for the I.d. It's a good time and it's really easy. My friends were doing real fishing just down the bank from me, I suggest putting the magnet in a plastic bag when you do it. My magnet is covered in iron particles that it's pulled out of the water and they are impossible to get off

that's awesome! Hope it helps your recovery go quickly. you found more than I do with the detector

Thanks! It was fun, you won't find any coins doing that because they aren't magnetic but it is a lot of fun

how large of a magnet do you use for this?

It's a neodymium magnet my dad got
From a friend like 4 years ago. I'll post some pictures of it tomorow. His friend just had it laying around the shop because he got
It for fun so he gave it to my dad for us to play with

are they expensive?

You have got me thinking about doing this- Harbor Freight has some cheap magnets that should make the fishing exciting...

The neodymium ones are expensive, I'm sure any large magnet would work though

Remember -- Magnets will pick up iron and steel only. Not copper, gold, silver, aluminum, brass.

That would really be a good story, it's fun though even if you wont get that kind of stuff. I tried it at a pond on a farm though that for sure had stuff in it but it was too far down in the muck

I have used magnets pulled out of hard drives. They are really strong.
So let's see those pics...
Here is one of mine
