Live in Cincinnati Ohio and am recovering from surgery right now so I thought it was a good time to go magnet fishing. I found an old lock this is the 2nd one of this brand that Iv found all year, a lot of nails and bolts, I kept a nail and some kind of screw because I thought maybe I could find whatever they go to they seemed old to me, a rock I thought might be a meteorite, 9mm casing and a bottle cap, machete blade or some other blade, railroad stake, belt buckle, filing cabinet lock and a hinge (that's what kinda lock I think It is), plow, a door knob and some kind of gear

So, if the magnet has to be large, and you'd probably be pulling in some heavy stuff, do you use a deep-sea rod and rig? Probably some heavy test line too, I'd imagine...

Here it is

Interesting thread. Hope you continue to post pics of mystery stuff pulled out of the Ohio. Your new hobby has me thinking. I live next to the Scioto River in central Ohio. Boat ramps are probably ripe with dropped tools. Like ... "Oh crap, I just dropped my socket set overboard".

You may not have encountered the fishing license police, but I'm wondering how "fishing for metal" is handled? You likely have the option to tell them you are not fishing, but removing trash as a public service. I'll have to tell my #2 son about this hobby. He has my aluminum canoe.

By the way, how did you manage to pull up a brass shell casing? And that plow has to weight close to 100#. Stuck in muck, it had to take some hefty lifting.

What exactly is magnet fishing? Noob question :) I've only metal detected

I don't actually use a fishing rod, I got a rope for tying boats to docks that says it can handle up to 300 pounds then I tied it through the hole in the magnet and reinforced the knot with duck tape just to be careful, and I don't know why the casing stuck to it. I never thought about it that's weird. And the I swing the magnet around in a circle and let it fly into the water then after It sank to the bottom I slowly real it in and wrap the rope around my arms. Sometimes you'll feel it catch on realllly heavy stuff that you can't get so you just have to give it a quick yank and it'll come off.

And Iv thought about what I'd say if confronted, I always take a garbage bag to put stuff in so if anyone says anything I would tell them I'm helping clean up the park and river by pulling out trash

There has to be a rusty pistol in your future. When you drag one up you probably will have to report it and fill out a ton of paperwork.

I see your avatar showing you in a boat. Is this your platform for magnet hunting or do you toss from shore?

M

I toss from shore. I was arrow head hunting a river in my avatar

Like the door knob my grandfather and I found on just like the one you have.

How did you find it? And how old do you think it is

Magnet Fishing, that's thinking outside the box for sure

That is one cool idea! I have many lakes in my area, will give it a try. The reals on fishing poles comes to mind.

Just make sure your line is strong enough, losing your magnet would really suck. I just throw it and pull it in by hand, I think that would probably be easier for the heavy objects such as the plow that was only 15 pounds but because of how it dragged the bottom it was hard to pull in

Nice finds. I've done a "little" magnet fishing myself. I think the brass pistol casing probably has a steel primer. That would cause a sticking.

Thanks, that's what I assumed too. Nice to have a compliment from aquachigger, I watch all of your stuff on YouTube

When I was a kid I did this off a boat doc. Still have that magnet. A great place to get this stuff (if it's still in business) is Edmund Scientifc co.
I found alot of jar lids from salmon eggs, a few fishing lures and a pair of pliers. But it was pretty fun.
