Here's a couple pieces I just picked up last week. The killer Thebes came in the mail and I got it from a member on another board. It is a very, very nice point. The base looked to be damaged and they and even told me so, but after getting it today and looking at it closely it may have been damaged a long time ago but it has actually been chipped that way. There is grinding present on both of the angles on both sides of the base so it was either made that way originally or repaired at a later time. It has a flea bite off the tip and that's the only damage I could find. He and I both believe it's Flint Ridge and it's very translucent. Just an awesome point for a great price. Also, though they aren't highly pronounced, I believe this is an E-Notch type which makes it even better.

The 2nd piece is a Bannerstone I picked up at the Flea Market today. There was a man there from Pickaway county Ohio that had about 6 or 7 trays of his personal finds and he had some really nice pieces and a some field grade pieces, but he was way to high on his prices for the flint which is usually the case with personal finds. I enquired about a Thebes he had that was smaller than this one and had one tang completely broken off that he wanted $50 for and I thought that was little too much. He also had 2 nice LeCroy Bifurcates in a tray that I figured maybe $75 for the 2 tops and he wanted $350 for them. I almost laughed at him.

He was surprisingly reasonable on this Banner and a couple of Axes and I wish I could have afforded all three. He had two 3/4 Grooved Axes for $100 which is a good price for legit Axes and I got the Banner for $40, talking him down from $50. The Banner has been anciently broken and then had repair holes drilled to tie the pieces back together. It has had the other wing broken off and glued back on by him. He said he found it in a tractor path and the wheel had broken it and he had hunted the field for 10 years after finding it but never found the other piece. It is a no brainer good piece. There are deposits galore inside the three holes and patina all over. You can even see the saw marks where they cut out the notch on top. Well worth the price to me for a great study piece.

I got the Banner for $40, talking him down from $50.

I hope you were wearing a mask because you 'stole' that piece for $40, you bandit! I love anciently repaired banners and buy all of them as well as broken banners. Their value as study pieces to learn what's good and what's not is incalculable.

That Thebes is kille,r too. I would have guessed Carter Caver but I'm not an expert on Flint Ridge (can't be an expert on EVERYTHING... ) Whatever the material, great material, nice flaking and good size. Good score!

Thanks targe. I couldn't believe when he said he'd take $40 for it since he was so high on his flint pieces. I waited until after I paid him and then I told him that in my opinion the Banner, though damaged, was the best item he had on his table.

As for the Thebes, I thought Carter as well when I saw the pictures, but after getting it at home and looking at it closely if it is Carter it's not like any I've seen before so that's why I thought possibly Flint Ridge. It was only $40 too. lol

You're correct, it's not Carter Cave now that I study it. In fact, it's only superficially like Carter Cave because of the predominant color. From what I recall of F.R. that sounds correct.

It almost looks like a Chalcedony with orange streaks through it.

Steve I'm pretty sure that's what it is (chalcedony) , I find chalcedony a lot I don't know why it didn't occur to me that was what it was. But I guess you could call it flintridge chalcedony I would have laughed too I love the bifurcates but not 350 for 2 love them, how big were they? material?
