I was hunting a plantation homesite built in 1795 yesterday and the only decent find was this Marine Corps cuff button. Based on my research the 6 point star indicates that it is an earlier design and the backmark would help determine the period but I can't make it out. Can anyone here take a guess at who the maker is and the date range for it.

I would need to know the backmark, but I can tell you that the size of the loop/shank is suspect. Typically the larger loops are post.
I believe it to be 1870-1900, but again see if you can make out the Backmark.

I have the worst luck with backmarks. I'd say that 95% of the two piece buttons that I did have an illegible backmark. This one is worn just enough to make it impossible for me to read. I was hoping someone might pick up on a pattern of maybe enough letters to make it out. BTW, congrats on another awesome hunt at Bill's colonial site.

From what I can see it might be Scovil MFG which would also fit it to the late 1800's date range.

Thanks man, having fun, it is actually a colonial site that we researched and dig together.

I don't know why I assumed it was Bill's site, maybe because the first time I read about the site it was one of Bill's posts. It's been a great site for you guys!
