Marking coins, why its futile

Just went through a box with 75% or more coins marked with the same black sharpie across the edge.

Netted: 61, 64, 66, 67, 68, 69

We go through the same coins, there is no getting around that....this does not mean we will not see keepers regardless. My limited experience anyway. YMMV.

Marking coins can answer one question: Are my dumps being recirculated back to me? That is it.

No, if you mark the right way, it can tell you a LOT more than that.

A couple of times when I found a new type of distinctive mark, I would mimic that mark on 20-30 other clads before dumping. Hopefully, no one was relying too seriously on any data they collected on their marks.

I don't know exactly why I did it, just for kicks I guess. I don't really have anything against those who mark coins. Now that I've matured into the hobby, I hardly even notice marked coins.
