Found this in a rock pile on the edge of my buddy's field while deer hunting. He doesn't know which field it came from and says the rock pile has been there as long as he can remember. He also couldn't understand why I was so thrilled to find a stupid rock. I think its a maul???

Its completely rounded on the end. Although i'm very interested in artifacts, I'll be the first to admit I know NOTHING. What is a bit.

That's what I would think. That's cool. I like how you found it. I had an old boy tell me to always check old rock piles at the edge of fields. Said the old timers would see it was indian, but it was still just a worthless rock, so they just threw it in the pile. Guess it's true.

You should be able to talk to a local auctioneer or antique dealer and find out plenty. Just don't sell it to anyone until you find out for sure exactly what you have. I have seen a lot of artifacts but I don't ever remember seeing one shaped like that. It is very possible you have a rare piece. I take my finds to the university and have the anthropology professor look at them. He always seems really pleased to see artifacts from the area and isn't upset about people collecting them. If you can find someone like that, it would probably be your best bet. Good luck and let us know what you find out, Charlie.

I'd say it's a maul. It probably looked like a football in it's original form.

Looks like it was used on the pointed end. Here's a picture for size comparison.
