Found this 6 to 8-inches down. It's about 1/2-inch long (about the size of your pinky fingernail).
I have no idea which side is up. Looks a little like Chinese characters to me.
The back is just a metal post -- too short to be an earring (unless some of the post is gone).

Any ideas?

It may be 1/2 of an old cuff link.

Interesting find!
I could be a parchment (letter) seal, and was pinned to the end of a piece of wood.

Doesn't look European at all in design-- kinda resembles the Egyptian scarabs of the Old Testament period, but those were not metal. Plus, the script on this one is not like those Egyptian scarabs (which usually had Beetle design on rounded side, script on the other). Most resembles Sumeria cuniform writing or something. Like earlier post said, maybe a cuff link designed to look ancient.

Seems a bit small for a cuff link...both overall and the little post. Maybe a tie tack?

Yea, the post seems too thin for a cufflink. I'm thinking tie tack or lapel pin.
Sure would be odd if it was just a random design.

Just a guess... a tie tack to look like an ancient nawanagar coin.
