✅ SOLVED Maybe candlestick holder?

Found this at a colonial homesite along with other find from the civil war. Looks to be a candlestick holder, however the slot on the side throws me off. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

it is a candlestick holder, well, a chunk of one at least
the slot in the side moved a base for the candle, down for full length and pushed up to top for stubs and removal of the bottom

In the righthand photo, it could be a cigarette holder.
