These from Iowa farm dump, bulldozed at some point. Found near an old farm disc and a headboard for a single bed. I can’t see it going with the bed. Maybe the disc, maybe not. The piece is 7-1/8” long. The winged piece moves up and down the shaft freely.
A friend told me it’s an element from an old water heater. It resembles one, but a heavy iron element link makes not sense to me.

Thanks. I felt he was wrong. I’ve changed several modern ones.

I’m thinking that had a wooden sleeve over the thin part with a drift pin going through it to hold it in place and it was a handle to something.

Dan is on the right track! The threaded piece with the tapered side was a pivot point, there was probably a spring involved ? the split end of the shaft was for a wooden handle. I have seen pieces somewhat like that on balers and other farm items that had adjustments for pressure or stroke>

Are there threads on the outside of the wing nut thing? Maybe part of the guts of a grease gun (missing the rubber)? :dontknow::dontknow::dontknow:

I’m with you on the handle idea. It was found near and old plow. Possibly an adjustment handle. The barrel fastener (circled in new pic)would be part of a spring tensioner. The sleeve (arrow points at) looks like it would make more sense if the cavity faced the other end. Then it would make a great end cap for a wooden handle
