My buddy found this today. As best as I can make out it reads"republique, francaise" on the left and near the bottom, in the rectangle "N J(S?) School"
There is something on the back but it is not legible. It is the about size of a half dollar.

I thought about that but the medal is very thin and the slot is small. It looks like it may have been attached to a ribbon. The medallion is only about 1/16" thick.
It could be a fob, I don't have much knowledge of them. Thanks for the reply.
