Hit some new fields today the weather was a bit on the cold side temperatures not climbing above 3 degrees but the expectations of a new field in good area made it worth putting up with the cold. The ground was a lovely sandy soil the only trouble with this it wears the silver coins badly this was soon confirmed with the fist decent find a Victorian sixpence (old head) to yards further on and another silver the fist hammered of the day Edward the1V penny(1461-1485) again badly worn, I had travelled the full length of the field with not much else to show outher than a few bronze coins completely devoid of any detail. On turning the corner I had my second hammered of the day in the form of a cut half penny Henry 11 (1154-199) not much else came up coin wise after this but I did manage a nice medieval beehive thimble only my second ever and easily the best, heres the pictures :D

I think I would pass out if I lucky enough to see just the castles and scenery that you all have.. and what proud history you do have.. You folks in the UK are soooooooooooo lucky..

Makes mental note to self...sell sell on ebay...move move move....

Very nice Tyre....The pic of the castle and the machine is awesome. Congrat's to Ya!!!

Hello Tyre. What great finds and an amazing field. I was lucky enough to find two hammered coins last month near York and some Roman as well as medieval goodies in Cambridgeshire in the spring. I have already made plans to return to the UK again in 2008. Keep those post with photos coming!
Happy Christmas!

Add a trip back to the uk to detect to my list Santa....
Always like seeing the things you guys/gals find over there!!!!!

I spent two weeks in the UK back in the summer and had the time of my life. Absolutely gorgeous country. I'm so envious of UK MDers.

In all seriousness, my goal is to move there one day and spend all my time in those lovely fields!

Great finds. A hearty congrats.

Cheers,
Brendan

Beautiful coins. Congrats with your "christmas" finds. Hope you find more goodies!

Thanks you guys for all the messages I'm back to the same fields on Sunday so hopefully I will have more finds to show you ;)

I just went out and checked... yep, still 5 inches of snow... yep, ground still froze hard as concrete. :D

Glad you got out and had all these great finds. Love the hammered coins.
Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Happy Christmas and best of luck in the coming new year!!

Smiles!

WOW, I am jealous. Those are awesome finds. I am just curious, does the UK gov't mind if you use a detector and find stuff like this? Do you need a permit or have to report them to anyone? I know some countries are sensitive about stuff like that. I was stationed in Sicily, and they were very wary of detector operators. Thanks, Bryan

Hi......things over here are getting a little harder the main objectors are the archaeologists they think we should leave it in the ground till they get around to recovering it, but the moddern ploughs that are about now do an awfull lot of damage to artifacts and coins, have a look at these ones they have been badly damaged due to modern day farming.

That is a shame, the damage on those coins. I am in North Carolina and got kicked out of a state park a couple months ago. The water had dropped at a swimming beach due to the present drought. I figured the area I was hunting was and will be covered with water again anyway, so what harm. Plus, the sign when entering the park says that, "You may take no plant, animal or artifact out ot the park." The park is not that old and it is a man-made lake. Oh well, rules are rules I guess. I had just found a gold necklace when the ranger was approaching me! Not to mention about 15 years ago I searched the same beach during a drought and found $52 in coins and 7 gold rings in about 8 hrs of hunting. Good luck to you, Bryan
