I could use some help identifying what kind of metal this point is made out of. I found it in a camp site that may be Rev War. A magnet won't stick to it and the color is dark gray.

Nice point. If its copper it is very thick.

It is thick. Also, it may just be a coincidence, but there are large discarded pieces of molten copper scattered about on that ridge. Those have a blue/green color though. Would a copper point be so grey?

It looks corroded, grey, and dirty.

Well it's clean. I thought about electrolyzing it, but I'm afraid it might disintegrate or something.

I have pulled out archaic copper which looks black in some soil. I would not do it but if you put it in hydrogen peroxide the green will come through...but don't clean it :).

Thanks for the help. Copper makes sense. I just put a protective coating on it and it's on display.

Nice point! Did it beep under your MD?

Never coat it . it has been fine for 6 thousand plus years lol. and pound that area by the water , should be more pieces

I was digging a signal from multiple targets. In the same 8" area, there was a square nail, a large button, and that point. When I pulled it out of the hole, I thought I just got lucky and found a regular point, but it was heavier than usual. When my pinpointer sounded off on it I knew it was something special. Well, I already coated it, so it's a bit darker and shinier. 'Just a habit.

I have one just like this . It looks just like it. All corroded almost looks rusty like.

Interesting! Mine doesn't have any rust color though. It's slate grey. 'Pretty sure its owner was part of the unit camped there in the late 1700's. The British forces had Indian scouts. That would explain the buttons I found on that ridge.

What state are you in? Very very old copper can have that look I'm talking about thousands of years old.
Do a search of copper culture artifacts and see what you think

'Found it in Virginia, near the Potomac. It matches up to old prehistoric copper points, just as you said. I suppose it could be coincidence that I found it at a Rev War camp site. The soil is rather harsh here though, as evidenced by so many unreadable copper coins. 200+ years in the ground may have been enough to corrode it so. I didn't electrolyze it!

Great digs! My spot has no other NA artifacts. This camp was soldiers; lots of buttons, coins and musket balls.

Good luck with it... after a certain period of time the corrosion can act as a preservative of sorts.
Lot of time things are found like that the same reason that made it a good camp site probably made it a good place for a very long time.
There's almost no place on this earth that another person has not been.. To think that no one was ever there before the soldiers made it a camp would be almost impossible actually

Finding the buttons and things from a few hundred years ago would be in a Level of soil well above many much older artifacts oftentimes some ground disturbance or erosion can uncover things much much older then what's in the surface layers and they can be found amongst them.
Who Knows maybe the soldiers dug a fire pit or buried there you know what when they had to go to the bathroom
