I am homeported in Yokosuka, Japan onboard the USS George Washington and am curious about metal detecting here. Does anybody know where I can find the laws about it? Also...do you think it is a good idea? I ask that because of all the old WW2 ordnance in the area. More specifically, can the electromagenetic field of a detector set it off? I am a Fire Controlman and when we are loading the 20MM CIWS Gun we have to turn off all radios and remove all metal items from us as part of HERO (Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance).Thanks.

This question has come up before, and I recall that the answer is that there is no national law blanketly prohibiting detecting. Naturally, just like anywhere, if you snoop around obvious historic landmarks, or are a nuisance in some way, someone will say something. A friend of mine was stationed in the Marines in Japan. He saw people detecting on the beach, and it was apparently a non-issue.
