Great looking newsletter John Winter. Not sure why but clubs today just don't put any effort into communicating with members, and those who might be interested in joining. If we ever want to be taken seriously we need to look smart and professional. Your publication does that and more.

Mr. John: It's d/t the internet. The internet , not apathy, spelled the end of brick & mortar clubs starting in the late 1990s. Now only the biggest cities have clubs anymore. Because md'rs began getting their socializing in the form of web forums.

In the old days, if you wanted to learn about the "latest detector tech", you went to club meetings. To see what others were swinging, how they squared up with yours, etc..... If you wanted to see what others were finding, you went to club meetings. If you wanted to show & tell your own stuff , you went to club meetings. If you wanted to buddy up with others to hunt, you went to club meetings. If you wanted to buy/sell/trade, you went to club meetings. Blah blah blah.

Now all those functions are done from everyone's fat sofa. It's made us all lazy. So it has nothing to do with clubs themselves. It's that the internet made us all lazy.

Correct. So it's not the fault of some "horrible club moderator, president, officers, etc..." for having some poor leadership methods. It's the fault of the internet, for giving us an alternative that's made us all lazy.

FYI

The object depicted at the top of page 8 of the newsletter is a HUMAN HARNESS, an astonishing memento and tangible reminder of the North East's coal mining history - found in the Maudlin seam of Wearmouth colliery. The purpose of this harness was to enable a boy (the putter) to pull a tub of coal in a manner similar to that of a pony.
