Metal detecting tips, tricks. These may or may not apply to your detector, post them anyway.

I have a few for my 2002 White's XLT.

1. When I find a target I might want to dig, I can raise my coil about 6 inches and see if the machine still reacts and produces a repeatable signal in the + range. If it does, it is 90% it is an aluminum can. Especially if the signal gives me an overload. Now, if the signal is in a public place, I won't dig it. If it is a homestead in a secluded area, DIG!

2. When pinpointing, I sometimes don't take the coil off the target as the instructions tell me to do. I leave the coil on target, pull the all-metal mode switch for pinpointing and the machine reduces the target area by a large percentage for more precise pinpointing. It also increases the depth reading which is incorrect. Go with the original depth reading.

3. When I'm next to a metal fence, metal playground equipment, metal building, I turn off my transmit boost. I can then get closer to the metal obstruction and find coins closer to the buildings other detectorists missed. Just yesterday, I found a Wheatie and a Barber dime using this trick next to some very old playground equipment.

Equinox 900 Tip. Get a white or silver sharpie to mark the lower shaft length and position. Makes it alot faster to change coils when you have a spare lower shaft.
