I was metal detecting in my yard, when all of the sudden my detector went crazy. I immediately started digging in the spot, and I found this. This is what the detector was picking up. I put it on a piece of wood with no other metal nearby, and I confirmed that this is indeed a metal object that my detector was picking up.

I went inside and decided to try and break it open to see if there was anything inside. No matter how hard I tried with a hammer, I could not break it.

Then I decided to try cleaning it up. This is what it looks like cleaned up.

It’s also got a very weird pattern on one side, almost looks like a crinoid fossil.

So, to sum it up, this rock is obviously made of metal. However, I am at a loss of what it is. I can’t break it, and I can’t identify it.

Any ideas?

Probably just a melted blob of metal, aluminum maybe…
Not museum quality.

Yeah, I wasn’t expecting it to be anything museum quality. I’m just curious what it is.

I just finished a simple test, and it’s not magnetic. I figured that would help also in identifying it.

Many call them camp fire nuggets. Is it light like aluminum or heavy like lead?
