Got this for a dollar with the nice bowl/pot from my other thread. Again I am stumped but suspect it is... something.

Very dense, old-looking, seemingly mineral or metal in origin (can't find my testing magnets so will test metallic content once I pick up new ones). The groove in the center seems deliberate, accommodates a finger nicely.

It was surrounded by good items so I suspect something interesting if not valuable, but don't even know where to start researching.

Finger groove.

This thing is heavy, 8-10 ounces at this small size...

I've seen clam fossils that look like that. Forget the name.

That was my first thought too. Pretty close in terms of shape and size, but this is much more dense than any clam fossil I've handled (no expert so that doesn't count for much), and also has a slick, molten, almost metallic texture.

Maybe a primitive clam-shaped tool for cracking shellfish?

So we're calling it a clam fossil? Still not convinced... anywhere I can take this (online or not) to be checked out?

Try looking up a rock hound group in your area. If you're in or near a decent sized city there should be at least one rock hound club. Good luck!

Post it in the fossil section here. There are one or two experts on there. May take a couple days but they will tell you whether this is a geofact or a fossil or perhaps something else. Fossils

Thanks, wasn't aware of a fossil forum
