Okay TNetters, I need some help!

I have had this rock specimen for some 15 to 20 years and can't remember if I found it or it was given to me by a friend. If I found it, then it more than likely came from North Carolina and likewise, if given to me, then my friend would have likely found it in North Carolina as well. My daughter found the specimen in one of my many rock and gem storing locations in a bag and dug it out to be used along with many of my' other finds for a display at a Memorial Service for a friend who recently passed that was also a Rockhound like me. I doubt that it is a meteorite and am leaning towards Magnetite. It sticks to a magnet, weighs 149.5 grams (5.27 ounces) and is approximately 2 5/8" long, 1 3/4" wide and 1 3/8" thick (optical effect due to positioning of the measuring tape makes it look longer, wider and thicker). It has pockets of gem material some of which is somewhat transparent and brown and appears to me to be either brown Garnets or Imperial Topaz and it also has some type of Fungi growing on it (i.e the little white spots).

I hope some of you can positively ID this specimen for me because I am not quite sure on my guess! Thanks!

Coal possibly.

Coal possibly.

Sorry, not Coal. I forgot to mention that the specimen is apparently very heavy in Iron composition and is brownish in some areas to almost but not quite black elsewhere. For those reasons, is why I am leaning towards Magnetite but one could always hope that it is a Meteorite.

I think it's slag

Give it a streak test and a hardness test but by looking at the crystals I'd say you have magnetite as well. Picture two on magnification looking center to left, well defined point, and center to right, partial defined point and facets, show octahedral characteristics.
A data source : Magnetite: The mineral Magnetite information and pictures

Thanks DD! I believe you are correct and the specimen is made up of many Crystals of different shapes, many of which are poorly formed (incomplete) or sheared off.
