meteorite?

[cherokee moon]

i found this one while working in the field. I discovered a short time later, it has purple and red colors that cover half of the surface of the rock and a magnet will stick to it! What is it?

Weight is key to identifying meteorites I read.
Best thing would be to take it to a competent mineral shop or a college sciences thing.
If they say it isn't and want it,,,, think hard,,

My guess is that you found a basalt specimen with visible iron oxide on some of the surface:

I have to agree with Ant. Many basalts contain iron sufficient to attract a magnet. This fact can lead to confusion by novices.

There are many guidebooks on identifying meteorites. Pick up a few. The information will be very helpful in answering future questions on meteorite identification.
