mid-1800s monster butcher's cleaver axe

Found this huge and heavy butcher's cleaver axe a few months ago (really deep) and still looking for a way to remove the heavy corrosion. Any ideas? I know is not pretty now, but with some cleaning it would look better. Planning to frame it and use it as deco piece.

P.S. - By the way the ruler is vintage too!

Thanks. That thing was about 24" deep. The question is how to clean it. I know that shops use electrolysis in these cases, but I don't have the equipment needed.

How about that! and I can't wait to clean it and frame it. I think it would make an interesting conversation piece once cleaned.

I've seen way too many horror/slasher movies not to appreciate your find.
Could I possibly borrow it sometime?

I think Bill the Butcher used the same one in Gangs of New York.
There are some good instructions on how to make your own electrolysis system here. You may need to go into the Forum section and search. It would be a fun item to try it out.

Damn that's big! I picked one up myself a while back, posted it here - http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,372930.msg2675167.html#msg2675167
Don't think too hard on the electrolysis, it's a lot easier then it appears. Myself, I just took an old universal adapter I had lying around...there are a lot of sites with detailed info on setting up a system but just remember it doesn't have to be complicated...

The monster butcher's cleaver I found is similar to the one used by Bill indeed. I do have an electrolysis system I made with a 12V adapter but not sure if it will clean such a big piece. If you've had experience cleaning big items with such a small system let me know to try it out.

Now you guys are getting me interested in iron relics. Cool! Can you please describe how you did it? I have cleaned with electrolysis but didn't know you could clean such a big piece with a 12V system. Tel me more, please.

I never cleaned any items so I am no good for information. I have seen a number of people's efforts here and they have been real good about posting how they do it, with various types of equipment. There are some posts which show the work on larger pieces so I think the Forum under the cleaning section may be a great place to look.

Re: mid-1800s monster butcher's cleaver axe

We had a high Chinese Population here in the 1850's and find a lot of cleavers.Cant say I have dug one that big but dig around 10-20 a season.I use electrolisis, and they come out awesome. You can also use a wire wheel. With that style of forged handle I believe your time frame stated is quite accurate

Re: mid-1800s monster butcher's cleaver axe

If you want to clean it up as much as it can, get some Naval Gel , you can buy it most places . It really works well , but be sure you want to get it as much as you can because it will not be left looking like a relic that is for sure.
It will also take a few times to get it cleaned off . But when you are done you can have it down to the core steel .

That is what I would do but this is up to you on the look of the finished product .
