Mid 1800's site

Took my dogs for a walk this morning figured I'd stop by one of my sites on the way back. This place is a pain to hunt. Pickers, prickers, and stickers that you can't see more than a few feet into. I chop some away and they grow back within a month. I've only been able to hunt one side of the foundation. I need to figure a way to clear it out to hunt the rest. This is the usual stuff from the site. When I seen the gold coming out of the ground my heart started pounding but then I noticed it was plated. Still a nice little piece. As for the hole punched in it I think maybe they thought they bought solid gold and when realized in was plated they put the hole in it to see. It looks like maybe pewter filled. There is a before and after photo to show how good lemon juice works on plated relics. I just put some lemon juice in a cup and let a q tip soak it up then rubbed it down and let it sit for a minute. A clean q tip and a tooth pick some light rubbing and this is how it tuned out. Thanks for looking.

Nice finds... You got to find a way to hunt the rest of that spot.. Not knowing what was there would drive me nuts... Thanks for sharing..

I think the hole on the front was where a small carved cameo ornament or the like was once affixed - this would make sense from the
remains of the pinback closure on the reverse and the existing pendant loop - looks like 1900-1920's to me .

Very well could be. Like I said I haven't been able to hunt most of the site but My earliest coin was 1818 LC and my most recent coin was 1882 IH. I doubt that there was anyone here in the 1900's.

Greylock , Just curious as to why you think nobody was around in the 1900's ?

Just some of the larger trees growing in the cellar hole and others that seem out of place. Depth of finds and lack of modern junk. I could be wrong though. Ill have to clear the rest to see what else there is.

Hi - Great finds from a tough site. You might be better served letting that site sit till late fall/winter before trying to clear some of the brush--might be easier then. Seem like you have a lot of great sites in the mean time. Nice looking chape too...

Good stuff, and a great cleaning on that gold plated piece. I think that may work better than aluminum jelly!

Nice shoe buckle chape too.

Cheers,

Buck
