:hello:
I dug these buttons on two different sites in SC over the last week. The first is a SC militia officer's button from 1840-60 dug on an old homesite. The second button is a New Jersey staff officer's button from the Civil War which was dug on the same site as the SC button.
The last button is an eagle dragoon from 1850s that I dug on a different site and it is cuff size.

Great buttons Keith! The Dragoon looks like a one piece, but if you say it's 1850's, I'm sure it isn't. From what I understand, one piece Dragoons are pretty hard to come by.

I love those sc buttons. congrats

Steve,
Here is the dragoon back. It's a W. Smith & Co. New York bm. I did not do any research on this company but assume its 1850s. These eagle D buttons are scarce down South-- only dug three like it in almost 20 years.

Sweet buttons!

Those buttons are AWESOME!!!!

Okay, now for the dumb questions:

Can you tell me about the Dragoons, or at least the official name, so I can google them?

I take it that this is a US button, and not British, right?

Again, sorry to ask dumb questions!!!!

Clovis the button is US and these troops were mounted infantry with riding skills. The US established them as early as the 1830s I believe, and in 1861 the army reorganized them into cavalry units with the onset of the civil War.
I have not done much research on the US dragoons, but the buttons are very interesting---I hope this helps some!
