Detector(s) used
Excal II
Hello,

I am a long time forum lurker, first time poster. I have had the Excalibur II for about a month now and I am still learning how to use this machine. My question is when I try to use pinpoint/all-metal the threshold tone is never a consistent smooth tone, I am not sure how to describe it but seems to be going in and out and it is difficult to hear any targets because the tone is all over the place. In discriminate, the detector is fine, I run it at sens 6, disc 1, vol 3/4, threshold just audible, nice smooth tone. One thing I noticed, when I adjust the volume down in pinpoint the tone becomes more smooth, but then I cant hear the targets because the volume is so faint. Has anyone come across this, do I just need to adjust my settings? In pinpoint, I adjusted the sensitivity to 2 and there seems to be no difference, the only change is when I adjust the volume.

Thanks for the help in advance.

they all do that..so do the Sovereign's...but i never run AM always disc but set @ 0

I have the slightly older Excal 1000 with the Blue headphones and it and my Sov GT acts the same way in All Metal. Not at all like my CZ-20. You should run it in Disc with disc set at 0 like Dixie Digger says. So long as it is ignoring iron you won't be wasting your valuable time digging hair pins at two feet.

when you ask for help you should always state where you hunt. in fla i use allmetal almost all the time why you ask because it gives me the edge on the comp that use the same machine i run at sens3 vol where it needs to be tres slighty higher than when in disc your looking for repeatable faint tones most of the time if you switch to disc the machine will null always listen to the returning sound if its lower then the normal ground sound dig i also feel that i have a wider coverage in all metal as far as a tres tone it wont be as smooth as in disc and youve already know how to smooth it out useing the vol but all this is useless unless we hunt the same beaches

Thank you for the responses guys. I appreciate it. And sorry, I hunt in San Diego, CA.

I hunt the middle Texas Gulf Coast and the threshold on my Excal II 1000 stays smooth in either mode. HH

On rare occasions I will hunt in all metal for the extra depth, but most times I hunt in disc, and I never need to use pinpoint, it takes too much time. For me it is very easy to pinpoint target with out switching to the pinpoint mode....

I hunt with either a WOT coil on my Excal or with the 15"x18" SEF Butterfly coil on my Sovereign GT, they both give amazing depth....
