Minelab Excalibur what cause"s "THIS"

Hello everyone

I own 2 Excalibur 1000, Ever since the detector's were brand new, I would be at the beach detecting and the threshold hum would get louder after a few minute's or some time's 10 minute's.

Now both my detector's do this so I'm sure everyone out there has the same thing happening.

I'm detecting and after a few minute's my detector's threshold hum changes and gets louder, And stays this way until i put my beach scoop near the coil.

Once my scoop is near the coil for a spit second, The threshold sound calms back down to normal and stays like this for another few minute's sometime's 10 minute's.

I contacted Minelab last year and sent the first detector back to Minelab, They checked it out and said everything is okay.

What i tried to explain to Sandy was i read where other people wrote that the Excalibur was going into a battery saving mode and this is what was making the different hum,

There reply was NO, They never did explain what causes this and why when i put my scoop near the coil for a spit second my threshold sound returns to normal.

I'm having a great time when I'm detecting with my Excalibur, And this problem does not hurt the performance of finding treasure.

I have last years excal 800 and the new 1000 I don't have this problem with either machines. I run the threshold in the silent mode and the sens at high. I dig very deep targets with no problem.

Your right Ronald, on the Excal you want to hear the threshold, it can be set to a faint humm, but you want to still be able to hear it, many times the only sign of a deep target is the break in the threshold. I have dug good deep targets that made no sound, the only way I knew they were there was the break in the threshold and I was running with no disc at all.

From the Minelab manual "the only thing that may alert you to the presence of a very deep target is a change in threshold pitch. This is a common occurrence in very junky sites, or if you are sweeping faster than normal."

Now on the Minelab Sov GT it has an additional option called Silent Search which is a really nice feature, and one of the many reasons I love the Sov GT.

"Minelab have added a Silent Search discriminate mode option to the Sovereign GT. In this mode, targets will still produce different tones based on conductivity, but you will not hear the changes in threshold tone, or the Nulling of discriminated objects. A slightly faster sweep speed is also possible, which makes the Silent Search mode ideal in areas of low target concentrations, such as the beach, where ground coverage is just as important as recovering the really deep targets. If a rich pocket or area is located, the operator can select the Threshold mode and slow down their sweep to ensure all targets are recovered.

To operate in Silent Search mode, you need to start with the switch in Threshold position and, using the
Threshold control, lower the level until it is just audible as you would if you were searching with Threshold.

Once you have this level of threshold, flick the switch to Silent Search. The threshold will now disappear but a faint target signal will still sound."

Tanks T Hunter and Indasurf. Just didn't want to talk PI in the Excal discussion but my symptoms were similar even with the PI. I do hip mount. I have not tried the straight cable that I can remember. Makes sense though. I make sure that I ground balance and even then, I get a small amount of that breathing threshhold tone. I have run my machine silent also and found no big difference in depth. I usually run the discriminate up to about a 4 but never higher and try to keep it as low as possible.

Thanks again guys. I hope everyone gets their pockets filled with goodies this year. Looks like the season is starting to heat up a little with some good finds starting to come in. The water is a bit cold for me right now even with my wet suit.

About another month should do it though.
