Here are two miniature axes I found over the years. Both found within 20 miles of my house.

Some folks say miniature axes dont really exists. Well I used to think that a LONG time aga. I have likely found over 100 axes and only two were the miniature type, 2 inches or less in length. I dont think these are the resharpened remants of a large full size axe. The dimensions don't hold for that theory .

I show the one miniature in the frame as well so you can see the miniature axes in relationship to celts and the overall frame size.

This slate miniature axe has a nice bit, and is pretty much complete but has many plow strikes. Found about 2.5 miles from my house.

In the frame, a standard 12 x 18 wooden frame., note the dark brown relic center top. I saw some relics like this at the recent ASO show in Cincinatti, I think it's a fossilized knapping billet.

At that size I would think it could be more of weapon than a working ax.

Maybe?

Man you find some cool stuff. I've never found any slate artifacts. What do you think the miniature axes were used for. I thought maybe weapon also, but you might want something a little heavier.

Maybe it’s something a guy made for his son? My boys want tools like mine all the time. I know they made bows for children as young as two, so a small axe wouldn’t be to much of a stretch.

I would guess a small size axe-like piece would be one hell of a head banger in a pinch. Being small and unobtrusive it could be efficiently stowed or stored until needed. Like a pocket derringer.
