Any ideas as to the value or rarity of this 3 & 6# candy scale, I want to sell it? It works and is fairly accurate. The paint has a nice patina and appears to be all original with no restoration work. There a pics of Toledo scales on the net but I haven't been able to find this model in this color that hasn't been restored. Also, anyone signed up for sites like Worthpoint.com and been pleased with the service?

Hello Gary,
I'm not an expert on "General Store" scales by any stretch of the imagination. Thought I did collect "Fur Trade & Pelt Scales" at one time. I use to do a lot of antique picking for dealers and I would see these scales fairly often. The market for this type of scale is fairly small, for example, where would somebody put it? :icon_scratch:

The type of people that might be interested would be an old General Store or a local country museum or maybe a
"Pioneer Village" of some sort.

My best guess on value would be between $100 - $200, but as I said, I'm not an expert.

Antiquarian,
Good points but perhaps someone who wants one of everything will buy it. :laughing7:

I'm selling it because we want to downsize. Thanks for the input.

Sorry Gary,
I didn't mean it to come off sounding negative. :-[

I saw nothing negative in what you said, in fact I thought it was well written with some good observations. I do think that most quality antiques will always have a market even if it's a small one. Trying to reach that market can be tough for certain items. I appreciate your input.

These are tough to sell sometimes because of the size. Yours is in better condition than most found. As an antique dealer for the last 17 years, I have seen many scales sold and have had a few myself. They can bring $150+ if all original and in good working order. If you sell it on feebay, keep in mind it will cost the buyer about 25-35$ to ship. I don't recommend worthpoint, it's okay for some people but most values can be found for just about anything on the internet for free.

Thanks for the info. I found a couple of nice sites with pics and info on antique scales & weights. This one showed several examples of the many types of scales that have been around. http://www.scales-and-weights.com/ I'll probably fork up the $10 and great an appraisal from an expert.

Below are the ISASC appaiser's comments. One thing he didn't know was whether or not the pan was original to the scale, or if the Toledo Scale Co. ever serialized their pans. The pic is of a small serial# rivited to the pan that I hadn't noticed before.

-The scale in question could be a candy scale, which is typical but might have had used for weighing grocery items, ie. rice, etc
-Pan is most likely alloy of some kind. The pan could be original style or might have been the traditional scoop pan shape
-Year of manufacture was 1935
-Estimated value as shown, $200 - $300, retail.
Giving craigslist list a try then ebay.

Very cool scale. As others have said, the problem is the size. Where would someone display it and the cost of shipping if you try to sell it on Ebay. I have this one listed on craigslist right now for $150 and have had no bites. This one is a grocery store or butcher shop scale. The fact that they are old & cool is great but finding a buyer is not so easy, not even a lowball offer on mine so far.

Nice scale. Any idea what year it was made, and what it weighs? The Toledo weighs 41 lbs. Actually, the estimated shipping cost using Fedex ground was much more reasonable than I expected. My main concern is that one or more pieces of glass could break if not handled carefully and now Ebay puts all of the responsibility for shipping damage on the seller. I listed it on Craigslist but haven't received a ligit inquiry so far. Good luck with yours. Let me know if you sell it. Gary

you may have to sell it with an ad like this, a junk ad i did for the sales
pitch, advertise a craigslist, where that retro, scene is happening
like in revamped neighbor hoods of larger cities
some possible markets
organic restaurant, organic store, coffee shop, ect, and use a sales pitch

(description of scale), would be an added piece of decor
to the retro, antique, decor in your store
