Hi all,

Dug this out of a sale and was hoping to figure out what kind of ship this might be.

I bought it on a blind whim (and probably paid far too much!) so I'm interested in any information/insight at all.

Thank you :occasion14:

I'm a land·lub·ber, but I'll take a stab at it being a large commercial fishing trawler

Common freighter circa mid 20th century

Could be a model of a WWII liberty ship. One of the cargo ships cranked out by the U.S. to haul freight to Europe and Russia. Definitely a cargo carrier.

That's a pretty nice purchase. I myself am fascinated with detailed scale models. Couple years ago I was in San Diego and visited the Maritime Museum. They had a variety of scaled ship models and you could observe this model builder behind a glass window working on a model ship. Talk about a job your required to take your time at. That's something I've never had a job at, it's always close the deal, get er done or some shift boss hollering WHAT ARE YOU DOING HAUL'N EGGS IN THAT THING, when your driving like a grandma mucking out a heading with an LHD in a freshly blasted round on a tunnel advancement. Then there's the freeways with hundreds of people with not a moment to spare.

The green funnel with the black top, the black hull, and the white booms, suggest that it could be from the Grace Line or maybe the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. I agree that it is a steamer that was used for cargo/freight.

This site might be helpful: https://www.shipmodel.com

Many thanks for the link. I will certainly explore that site.

I do wonder if it's a folk art model because there is no artist or identification whatsoever, etc. That complicates things greatly if so.

I too think it is a model of a W.R. Grace cargo ship, maybe late 1800's. Grace ships" cargo and liners" had green stacks, black hulls and white rigging. I worked for Grace for 37 years and saw pictures of the old ships.

Definitely getting closer to an ID, thanks to the great help in this thread. The photos on that site are excitingly similar!

Edit: looks very similar to this one, then again I am a landlubber as well and don't have the slightest clue how to distinguish the finer parts of a ship.

Perhaps one of these three ships?

Went back and edited my post with the same thought, at about the same time of your post. Certainly looks like the one in the background to me!

This page is also fairly comprehensive: Grace Line Ocean Liner Postcards

I'll try to contact the owner and see if he may have a guess.
