Detector(s) used
Whites Prism IV / Bullseye II pinpointer
Hello everyone. This is my first post in a while, well, since I broke my arm cuff on my White's Prizm IV last week anyway. I got that problem resolved in an OUTSTANDING way to say the least, but today was my first day back out on the hunt with the new machine.
I work with a LOT of different machines on my job, even some "like" machines, but one thing is for certain. No Two machines are exactly alike. At work we jokingly call it "personality", each machine has it's own personality, foibles, quirks or idiosyncrasies. So, when White's traded me a brand new detector for mine with the broken arm cuff I was worried that the new detector wouldn't work the same. Would it work as well? Would I have to learn it's "personality" all over again before I started finding targets reliably? Well let me tell you! NO PROBLEMS! This new detector works like a champ! I found no discernible differences in this machine compared to the one I just traded in. And today was a VERY good day for detecting.
Well.. it ended up a good day.. it didn't start out so good. I got up before dawn this morning determined to go hunt in a park that just had an arts and crafts fair this past weekend. It being Monday and most people being in school or at work I thought I'd have the whole park pretty much to myself. And, I did. I got to the park just as the sun was breaking over the horizon and the red light was burning through the bushes and trees. The Squirrels were EVERYWHERE! Brazen little tree rats that they are! I parked my truck, geared up with my utility belt. (belt with my digger, and my finds pouch) With my new detector in hand, and my ever so trusty bullseye in the other hand, I began sweeping my way from the parking lot to the tot lot. I figured I'd sweep the swingsets and slides in the kiddy playground before getting down to serious coin sweeping. And that's just about when Mother Nature let me know that I was up WAY too early to be out detecting. The red light of the rising sun should have tipped me off, but somehow I overlooked it, till the first flash of lightning and clap of thunder got my attention. The skies were still dark.. and getting darker! As I was taking this in, the heavens opened up on me and down came the rain, and hail, and leaves, and acorns and twigs and branches, and cats and dogs and frogs and fishes.... well ok, maybe not the animal life, but it did rain HARD! Good thing there was(is) a shelter right next to the tot lot. I sat under the protection of the picnic shelter for almost an hour till the storm passed. It was still raining, but it was sporadic and very light at worst. Besides, I was under some massive old trees in this park. Even the name of the park is indicative of this, "Woodland Park".
Well I get back to metal detecting and was finding pennies and dimes and a nickle every now and then. LOTS of pull tabs, both older and newer types. One thing to remember about BIG OLD TREES, especially in the summer when they are in full canopy. They can shelter you from the rain pretty well when it starts, but they will shower you for a long time after the rain passes. After a half hour of detecting after the storm I was soaked and knowing I had to take my wife to a doctor's appointment later in the morning I figured I'd call of the hunt for the time being and maybe pick it back up later in the day. So I went home, dried off, cleaned up, took my wife to the doctor, had lunch, returned home after dropping her off at work. I took care of some errands that needed attending too, then finally with a whole day's anticipation built up I returned to the park.
When I resumed hunting, the skies were now clear, the temperature was a mild 80 degrees Fahrenheit and there was a nice flowing breeze making it very comfortable indeed! I began sweeping in a different direction on my second hunt, but right out of the parking lot (into the grass) I was getting targets. I mean litterally inches into the grass from the parking lot. Of course a lot of them were trash, pull tabs, bottle caps, etc. But there were coins too! Lots of coins! And other goodies! I found a single gold earring, too bad I couldn't find it's mate. There was a single bead from a necklace, with silver flower (links) on either end. Odd finds, like the pad lock, the razor blade, several S-hooks and curtain hooks.... guess they were from the vendors displays during the crafts fair. Bobby pins! I found two more broken pairs of eye glasses, key fobs, a locking hitch pin (for a trailer I suppose) Nuts, Bolts, Screws, a belt buckle?, two melted blobs of what appears to be aluminum. I found one lone caribiner (think key chain clip) and LOTS AND LOTS of clad. One old nickle (1947) and one Wheat Penny (1951).
Oh.. and the MONKEY! <chuckle> I guess it was a child's toy or part of some clothing or something, but it was (is) a little cloth monkey head. Boy, the things we find metal detecting!
All in all I had a VERY VERY good day, as I said before. Combined, my ill fated and shortlived hunt in the morning with my much nicer and proliferous second hunt that evening I found 133 coins for a total of $8.06. HUNDREDS (seemingly) pull tabs and bottle caps, and copious other metal bits and pieces. Oh, and the earring and necklace bead. My fears and worries about relearning my detector were put to rest and I had a really good time detecting today. Got to love this hobby! Now.. I wonder if I can sneak off and maybe do some detecting tomorrow as well..? <grin> Happy Hunting everyone!
