IMHO....
This 'coin' is not a coin, but a (poor) replica of a 1652 (tranditional) cob coin.
The Proclamation (of Nov. 19, 1800) had to do NOT with this type of coin but with the reevaluation of another eight reales coin, the round 'piece of eight', similar to the 8 reales of Carlos IIII.

Coins other than the originallly intended Proclamation coins are marketed today with the word 'Proclamation' in an attempt to associate themselves with the true coins referred to in the Proclamation.

PS: Thanks for your mail; just got it and I'm sure will enjoy the reading.

Re: More & Beyond - Down Under

I figured it was a fantasy piece and not the mint's interpretation of the royal "specifications" issued for the transition. It was timely after reading the mail you sent and some further studying in Menzel's main work (which has some diagram's that I don't think are in the booklet). If nothing else, the unfounded "copy" does encourage further study of the scandal, reform, and changes to coinage that occured during the transition. Might make a cool key fob if it was less than $10.

Right, Stan.
I believe the conversational and educational value of the piece would far exceed a $10 tag.

Great link Sam. Right on topic. Very educational.

Thanks for the reference to the upcoming auction. It will be interest to watch that bidding and final price. I also note that the replica still has no bids with a starting request of US $27; bidding will end in a couple of days.

With buyers pemium ($1260) added it went for $7560.

Re: More & Beyond - Down Under

Stan;
That's a great price. It may now induce others to sell some of our Capitana (1654) "52" transitionals.
