Unbelievable! I decided to do a late afternoon hunt around 3:00 at our new spot we call "button hill". I expected to find more buttons, I found 10 on Friday. Did not think I would find 17 more buttons today in a 15 foot stretch along an electric fence. I dug about 3 buttons in a small 2 foot area, walked down dug a few more and came back up just gridding along the fence and dug a beautiful Royal Artillery button. Not sure on the rarity of these buttons, but I haven't seen any posted since I've been a member on this board. The shank is intact and standing straight up. All I have really found on the button is that it was from around 1790's - 1812 era. This brings my button count up to 113 and between my cousin and I we are well over 210 buttons. Whatever this site was, I am so thankful to have it. There's about 5 acres of unlimited buttons to dig it seems like. This is certainly a dream site and can't wait to see what one of us pulls out next! Thanks for looking and HH!

Yeah that's a decent old one. Those type are often single hole - blow hole back, but can be the usual convex open back too.

Man y'all have found a great site!! I love finding buttons but finding military buttons is super special! I've found a lot of buttons since getting addicted to this hobby but only a handful of military ones. Congrats again on some amazing finds! Looking forward to what y'all find next.

Yeah, when I cleaned the dirt off the back I thought I put a hole in it. So that little hole is supposed to be there?

Yep. Made that way... blow hole back, single hole. I've seen these so many times it's what I expected.

I have an idea why "maybe" so many buttons, as was the case near here. Way back some paper was made of rags, so people would cut the buttons off in preperation of the paper making.

I also posted one of those button 10 days ago, not a blow hole, but same design, and date.

Interesting theory. I have found a lot of thimbles, more so than usual. Could it have been a seamstress or tailor site?

I don't find it surprising. Just think of all the hard work that went into, and around a house that stood for 40-50 years and how many buttons were either lost, or clothing they went threw and maybe tossed out. I'm guessing they would have saved the buttons in most cases, but who knows. A 100 buttons at a 50 year site is only 2 lost per year on average.

Just think of all the hard work that went into, and around a house that stood for 40-50 years and how many buttons were either lost, or clothing they went through and maybe tossed out. I'm guessing they would have saved the buttons in most cases, but who knows. A 100 buttons at a 50 year site is only 2 lost per year on average.

It's not uncommon here for a few houses to be very close, and all in one field, so no doubt it's the same there. We have one field that I'm sure 1,000+ buttons have been found.... the place was hunted and hunted and hunted and just would not die.

It's because there was many houses spread out so stuff was everywhere. It was quite a spot, the fist guys who hunted dug 60-70 large coppers their first evening hunt... there's been Spanish silver including cobs, just my better coins I dug a Vermont and a fairly uncommon 1773 Hibernia.... Was Rev War buttons, 1812 buttons, several cannon balls, trade axes, and a nice trade silver brooch. It was one of those fields that if you put everything on one big table people probably wouldn't believe how much came out from one field. Now 10 years in it's pretty slim pickins, but I do go back every so often and even if I don't dig anything there sure is a lot of good memories that come to mind between the signals.

Not sure. Still think it was more than just a house site.

My Nan was still saving every button, so I think it would be the norm in that period.

(don't forget, some Grandmothers button collections had 100+ year old buttons)

That is an awful lot of buttons for a house site unless they had a lot of slaves back in the day. I would think tavern but you aren't finding the number of coins you would at a tavern. Paper mill is a possibility but you would need a large stream nearby. Enjoy that site while it lasts. But I have a feeling you will be pulling stuff out of there for years to come, just not the numbers you're getting now.
