I had a Saturday class today, so I decided to hit the woods again at night after class. After reading something, I decided to hunt in 15 khz with the DFX. I've cleaned out the silver, so I'm cointinuing after the nickels. Last night, I found an 1888 liberty nickel and posted it in this thread http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,133771.0.html, and tonight I found an 1891 Liberty nickel which was about 7" deep and gave a nice signal in 15khz and almost no signal in 3khz. About a half hour later, I found an 1869 shield nickel, the first shield nickel ever and oldest coin from the site so far. It was on a path that I've hunted a zillion times and it was only about 5" deep. How did I miss it? I must've walked over it so much it isn't even funny. After I dug the nickel, I found a little ferrous jean rivet the size of a lentil about 3 inches across which was the culprit. It was so close and shallower that it masked it. However I was smart and used pinpoint mode and picked up the nickel first, which is a feat considering that I was using the super 12 coil. Nickels aren't apprecieated as much by detectorists, I believe. They corrode much more easily than silver. Thankfully the dates are still readable on both, even if the 9 in 69 is a little weak, kind of looks like an 8. With my luck in finding nickels, I wonder if anybody lost a gold coin? It's a possibility
