It was just after I started searching that I remembered the guy who owned the house was an acquaintance of mine - his son and my son went to the same school, and he was an avid deer hunter (which explains the arrow and bullets..we DON'T live in a high crime neighborhood)!

Happy hunting,
Nat

Nat,
You Sir are a digging machine! Congrats on the silver. I like your idea of asking a realtor to get permission. Great job.

That sure is some nice silver you got there... Also a great idea about asking realtors. Wish I had thought of that 30 years ago!

Thanks..I figured there's so many empty houses around here with names and phone #s on the signs..what did I have to lose? I even told them my address to give me more credibility and let them know exactly what my intentions were. So far I made 3 calls and searched 3 yards! Yesterday the guy said, "May I ask what for?" I thought I was going to have a problem but then I just told him I was doing it for fun to see what was there..today I talked with a very nice R.E. lady and she asked, "What are you looking for?" which I thought was kind of funny!

Nice digs!

I have considered this option a couple of times, but thought that no RE would want someone digging holes in a yard (no matter how good you are at leaving no trace behind) that they are trying to sell.

How much success have you (or anyone else) had in working with the RE's to get permission?

I was looking for a house a year ago and had picked up several free publications for my area that listed houses for sales and had pictures with most. Found several empty pre-1900 houses that were up for sale, and thought "hmmmm...looks like a good place to detect." If I thought there was a chance in hell that I could get permission to hunt these, I would have asked.

Let me know and thanks for posting this great info.

Scott, I think it really depends on the area and the house..these homes were not what you'd call "prime real estate". Some are in bad need of repair, and the yards are in desperate need of cleanup..if you happen to see a gorgeous house with a gorgeous lawn, the agent may not be as willing to comply with that kind of request.

Nat

To answer your question about the success of getting permission - I just started doing this because I noticed so many empty homes with signs. So far my success rate is 3 for 3. As for asking homeowners who still live there, I've only had 1 elderly person turn me down.

Natman,

Excellent point. Thanks for bringing this up.

I think I would stand a better chance if I didn't take on the ritzy places.

A theory worth testing!

very cool finds. nice haul....

I also called the number on a for sale sign the other day... wasnt an agent but the owner... He also asked me the what for ?... i told him old coins... His yard and what was left of the home were a mess...

He said go for it.. but if i strike it rich to call him...

lol..

There ya go!

Thanks..all these yards have one thing in common - lots of variety. It helps to paint a clearer picture of the people who lived there..the more stuff there is, the more I know about them (especially how careless that guy or one of his buddies were losing those bullets - can you imagine a lawn mower hitting those? KA-POW!) He didn't seem to have much luck keeping track of those hose nozzels either.

Thanks Doc, I had my disc low thinking just maybe there'd be one but so far it hasn't happened. The grass is starting to get thicker so it's not as easy to dig..better than that ice and snow though.

I like the old garden hose nozzles. When I find one I clean it up and place it on a shelf with the rest I have found. This way you can see the difference in them and they make a nice collection.

Nice finds, Nat! Quite a haul.

And a very good idea about asking the RE agent for permission, thanks!

second pic on the left near the bottom the 4 sided star looking thing is a tent spike...would usually have a "hook" on the top to loop the rope from the botton corner of a tent to keep it taught nice finds and great idea about gaining permission

ive been doing this for years. even went into the local agent and ask to borrow there MLS BOOK listings book of all homes for sale in your county.(like a highway to tresure book) but the book must be returned to the agents office. there updated every month so see if they have a older one laying around to keep these books are awesome. gives age of property street adress even owners names and adress. found many a silver going only to the late 1700s to 1900s homes farm estates etc.. good hunting-!!

Lots a good finds there, Nat!

Nana :)
