Now, if you were pullin out piles of silver like aquachigger I would understand.

Never could relate to those super stealth swingers who think there's a handful of guys waiting behind every bush to "steal their finds"

Yeah, and for me, it defeats the "saving history" notion. I see all these cool things and have no historical context for them at all. When I see a relic found, I'm interested in knowing what battle it came from, for instance... which is rarely disclosed. Hell, I can't even get these guys to help me understand how stuff can stay in a river for 200 years without getting washed away.

Every one of my finds is entered in a journal with date and location. Keeping a location close to one's chest is quite common among relic hunters. That really shouldn't come as any surprise. There are the concerns about others stalking your sites and also privacy issues from landowners.

I had the same question about items staying put once in the water. One would assume the force of floods over decades would redeposit those items in a wide area. Not true. As Aquachigger explained to me, heavier items like lead bullets, plates, etc, tend to settle on the bottom and pretty much stay there. Perhaps the flow rate on the bottom of rivers and creeks is slower than on the surface . . . ??? I don't know, it defies logic in my mind, but my experience lines up with what he told me.

Great vid. And congrats on the finds. Can you say what river that is without giving away your location. Im a civil war buff and would like to know what river it is from a historical perspective. If not I understand.

Ted

Hey Ted. Believe me, everything within me WANTS to disclose the location - for the same reason. But I simply cannot, at least not until me and my partner have given it a pretty thorough goin' over. Thanks for watching.

No I understand, im just a civil war nut and you live in a great location. Maybe some point in the future you could send a PM or post what river it is. Good luck to you and your associate the rest of the way. :icon_thumright:

Thanks for those well wishes, Ted :icon_thumright:. In Rick's defense (not that he needs nor seeks it), in this particular situation he has no choice but to be elusive about it at present. Being relatively new to detecting I've sometimes wondered about the secrecy of others, but conversely this situation has given me new understanding as to why sometimes there's absolutely no choice in the matter. :-\

i have a area here in nw mo it is in wide open view almost a field but it is a old retired place near to my heart and when i start mding it it will make a lot of people very inquisitive because of what it used to be and they will want what i find in the associations national museum and when i have it about empty i will share what i dont keep in my persoanl collection with the museum there arent many of the fellas alive that used to go there and they have money that i cant fight thats why i am waiting till next year to talk about it .

Hey there Old Stonewall,
Now that warm weather is here, im planning on doing some hunting on the N Fork of the Shenandoah soon. John boat, goggles, and ATPRO kinda hunting. Near Cedar Creek.
Let me know if youre interested.

You must never have had a great site poached. Perhaps one day you will and then you will understand. Some diggers are leeches. Some are unlawful. Some are unethical. And those few spoil it for the rest of us.
