More SILVER plus a beautiful GOLD locket from my neighbor's yard

I returned to my neighbor’s yard Saturday after my uncle’s funeral with about 2 hours of daylight to work with. This was my 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] hunt in this yard which is only about 75 yards up the street. This time I got two silver dimes and a beautiful gold heart locket. The tally from this yard now stands at (4) silver dimes, (2) heart lockets, and (76) coins overall. Of course I’d rather be digging 18[SUP]th[/SUP] century coins and relics, but when there is silver and gold right up the street…..

These people were definitely locket losers as this is the second one from this yard. When I dug it the one side was shiny gold, but the engraved side was dark brown. I at first thought only one side was gold plated. I was pleasantly surprised when I got home and started cleaning it.

Here's the take from Saturday's hunt. I was happy to get two more silvers.


I got out for a while on Sunday to an older farm that I have pounded over the last year. The only decent find was this flower button made by Benedict & Burnham who operated from 1834 to 1843.

Unfortunately the little brass hinge on the left edge is froze up with corrosion. it would be cool to open it up, and see what's inside, as well as any markings, but it would break in two if I tried.

I would think that your local Jewelry store would be able to get the Locket open without doing any damage. Could be worth the few dollars to have them do it for you.

Thanks but I am very hesitant to try that. The delicate hinge is a solid piece of fused corrosion, and I don't see how it could be made functional again..

It was even more exiting when I started cleaning them and saw how beautiful they were. I wish I could date them, but I'm not much of a jewelry expert.

That's what happens when you focus on the older sites. Definitely a trade off to be made.

There are tons of untouched yards in the Northeast. It all depends on your networking and door knocking skills. I would rather be hunting 18th and early 19th century sites, but can always fall back on the yards, which is where I cut my metal detecting teeth many years ago.

Thanks Tommy. I actually showed to the property owner, but the engraved side was caked with a thin layer of dirt and no gold was showing on that side. The other side was bright and shiny and we thought only one side might be plated. Turns out it's solid gold.
