David, hi and welcome to T-net. In order to be able to help you, we need more information. Pictures with size references will help us. It will also help if you edit your profile so we know the which part of the world you live in. Are you near a base, where they have live fire drills? Or maybe a WW2 site?? Having said all that, here's my 2 cents. Personally if I EVER dug up ANYTHING that looked like Military ordnance, I would notify my police dept., and let them know what I had found. You have no way of knowing if its still live or not. Best to let the EXPERTS handle it. If its a dummy and in no danger of going off, they will give it back to you. If it is live, in most cases they will detonate it, at a remote location. There are probably folks here on the site, that could tell you whether or not there's any danger. Good luck.
