It's cut copper wire and yes,alumninum oxide for polishing. There is a thread on the bottle forum with the info on the specs on the machine and where we got some of our supplies titled My first bottle hunt penned by me.

Good luck Mucky, I hope you get that jug out in one piece, those bottles are things of beauty. I'm going later today to a spot of mine where there is allot of brass bullets, I want to see how many I can find in one outing. One bullet weighs very close to one ounce, I checked yesterday, 1.40 per pound for this brass. Hopefully while I'm digging bullets I'll come across some old coins or bottles.
