My $20 worth of CW & older auction buttons - Need help

O.K. Folks,
I did NOT dig these but I was hoping that I could get some help on some of them.
Yesterday, Potted Meat Bubba and I hit a country auction. It was full of old coins and bills, tons of old fishing lures and gear, antique ammo, guns, yada, yada. There were a few CW cases with bullets, and one case with buttons all dug in the 1970's from the Aversboro, NC. Battlefield (March 15th/16th, 1865). The bullets went for more $ than Bubba or I were willing to pay.
The buttons (approx 80 total) were all face down in a Riker case so it was a bit of a crap shoot as to what was in there. :dontknow: Long story short, I was high bidder at $40. Bubba and I each had $20 invested. We took the buttons to Bubba's underground lair and took turns picking so it was an even divide. Like kids in a candy store. :laughing9:
Pictured here is my $20 worth. I started looking them over and cleaning them up better when I got home. I think I did pretty well with only 50 cents invested per button. ;D :icon_thumleft:
I found a few that I think are pretty odd & need some help IDing them. :icon_scratch:

Button 1 - "Beer & Poindexter - Richmond, Virginia" (17.6mm) nice gold gilt flat button.
Has anyone ever heard of that back mark? Age?
**UPDATE: ID'd as mid-1800's tailors in Richmond**

Button 2- Cuff button (14.3mm) with a shield and stars around the edge. Any ideas? ***UPDATE: ID'd as a NY state CW era cuff button***

Button 3- Face button (12.4mm) - I swear I see a face and letters on the front. Strange shank too. Any ideas? Age?The face and long hair looks to me like something you would see on a 1700's type coin???

Button 4- Unknown design - Any idea??? **UPDATE: ID'd as a Prince of Wales feathers design**

I also ended up with one Eagle "I" button, and four other Eagle cuff buttons, one Tombac button, and many other asst'd flat buttons.
I know flat buttons are a common find for a lot of you, but I just couldn't pass up the deal and historical value for that price.
Bubba is still looking through his haul. He's trying to find one that says "Drink more Ovaltine" on it. :tongue3: :laughing9:

Thanks for looking & any help you could give.

Re: My $20 worth of CW & older auction buttons - Need help

You're not crazy MM, I definitely see a face there too, but I've got zilch on ideas for it.

The shield design is a New York button, or at least it looks like it to me. I'd say that was a pretty good $20!

Re: My $20 worth of CW & older auction buttons - Need help

It would take $500 worth of gas and many, many trips to dig that many buttons so I'd say you and Button Bubba got a DEAL!!. HH, Quindy.

Thanks for the New York button info J.R. You hit the nail on the head. I not see the eagle on top of the shield on mine. Thanks.

I'm glad you also confirmed that I am not crazy. :tongue3: :P :laughing9:

Thanks Q.
I never thought of it like that. :icon_scratch: I would love to find out more about the mystery face button, and the "Beers & Poindexter" button. Here is all I could find on Google on the Beers & Poindexter names:

Great buttons Doug...#6 is a New York State button Civil War era...The face button intrigues me and reminds me of a patriotic button I saw somewhere. I have been scrolling through my books looking.

Thanks Mike.
I'm buying you lunch if you find it. O.K., dinner. :laughing9:
Even the shank looked different to my. It's like a flat brass band style rather than a wire type loop. You can see the soldering done on the shank too.

Other than your finger that is Prince of Wales Feathers, very common symbol on both military and other buttons.

Thanks so much Keith.
I had a King George ID also in the What Is It section, so that must be it. :hello2:
Any idea of the age range that this could be? 1700's- mid 1800's perhaps? :dontknow:
I don't see anything on the back that would ID it as a coin, so I'll go with your ID of being a portrait button.
Well done! Here are a few more pictures of my button, and also a few bust shots of King George.

On coins the image of George III changed by 1799 so I would say what you have dates close to the range that use a similar type bust so 1770s/80s. The halfpenny is 1770-1775.

Re: My $20 worth of CW & older auction buttons - Need help

I can definitely see King George on it... Maybe a coin turned into a button??

Great stuff guys. A late 1700's button or cuff link would be awesome!!! :hello2:
Thanks for pinning this one down.
