went back up to a site i hit a few times and targets are pretty sparce.I dug my knee buckle here yesterday.3 hours into hunt with nothing to show but a few pieces of iron & a couple shotgun headstampsI decided to go way in back of cellar hole and was follwing a rock wall when BAM solid 80's on the vdi,5 inches I was mumbling please let it be one so,i can make it 70 on the year.sure enough there it was.a 1787 New Jersey colonial copper.
6 coppers from this site & a 1773 half reale.very quiet at this site but, when you hit a good target its old.also got this piece of unmarked silver.no clue what the heck it is or was.looks like it was repaired at one time.rang up in the quarter range.thought it was gonna be another coin

Your mistake was rinsing it under the water after you were done. If you don't, the patina stays.
it never touched the water after the peroxide.i just patted it dry with a towel :O(
Don I know...it's like the lottery with dug coppers either ya win or ya don't. i placed the coin in for 20 secs then dipped a Q-tip into peroxide while holding the coin gently rubbed a little with q-tip.saw the green patina coming off and patted it dry and this is what i ended up with.I know it's the soil conditions.every coin is different.this one i shoulda just left alone but,ya don't know till ya try.i won't lose any sleep over it.like you said.."it is what it is"
some coppers i have cleaned have a hard glossy like patina that seems to have sealed the coin.this one did not and when it got wet with the peroxide just dissolved the green

Another mystery piece of silver out of your sites.

Maybe you should count them too:laughing9:

Nice finds, Congrats on 70!!!

Congratulations

That is an awesome NJ :occasion14:

any variety is a yet for me...
btw, we have matching buttons, I got one of those star & curlicues earlier this year :icon_thumright:

I hate peroxide, don't allow it in the house.

(laurie smuggles it in to do her hair color :laughing7: )

Did you heat the peroxide? Maybe that was it, because I clean coins like this over and over again and don't recall a single one I could not keep the patina if I wanted to. I use the peroxide at room temperature, brush it gently to remove the crud and dirt, then lay flat to dry.

Regardless of the cleaning, if you got the ID it's still the same coin, and a good one to add to your pile.

I'll try that. Only because I heard it from you :laughing7:

Great work on the coppers so far this year. That NJ is in pretty darn good condition.

Wow! 70 just this year? You'd think I could find just one....even in Ca. I guess I'll just have to go hunting with you!

I had a Conn. do that same thing to me. IH's are, in my area, notorious for that. So I usually use peroxide on a Q Tip for that. BUMMER! But, nice find anyways. Hogge
