I thought I'd share this with you guys, kinda crazy...My bank mgr. called and said "we took in some old Silver Dollars today you need to come over and check 'em out" I took my loop, scale, magnet and a couple of real Silver Dollars with me. The teller that took them in was thinking of me at the time....It only took a few seconds to see that they were counterfeit. Weight was 19g and the magnet picked them up besides the funky details. The poor teller felt bad :unhappysmiley: So I offered the mgr. the $34.00 dollars that they paid out for the 34 coins and brought them home. So now what to do with them...? I'm going to give some to my coin collector friends because they would not be able to buy "Real Ones". And then I'm thinking when I'm out detecting with my buddies I might just drop one here and there, to catch the reaction:laughing7:

I dunno about plantin' 'em. Even stamped with an apologetic disclaimer on them. It's tough to read when one dies from a heart attack. ;)

How'd you feel if someone gave you one of those joke lottery rub off tickets? ;)

I would definetly have a few choice words!

I knew it wouldnt be long before the internet police would show up. Great job,WC...d2

I would have gladly bought them too. Just to show others how quick they too could be scammed on to good to be true sale. Want to sell or trade a couple? Send me a PM if your interested.

A field day followed by a public paid vacation!

I get scrutinized more at the store when I'm trying to spend one of those gold one dollar coins that has discolored!
I actually have to lie and tell them it was in a can of change in the garage that water leaked into.

Wicked thought.....that dropping some for your friends bit....i like it.

Take one to the swap meet with you with a hard drive magnet. I've got a bogus silver peso that I will show people asking "How much will you give me for it? As soon as they pop up an offer I snap it out of their hand with the magnet and say Really? The blank look with the open mouth is hysterical!!! Seriously! out of all the times I've done this, only one person immediately called it fake. A lady that has owned a pawn shop for years almost made an offer on it. Boy was she embarrassed!

Stamp them copy and have some fun!

I found a Morgan Dollar once. I got super excited until I started to look at it closely. I realized it was too shiny. And the word "COPY" was stamped on the reverse. Is pi$$ed me off for a few minutes then I thought it was pretty funny. Im sure someone was messing with me. I have hunted that strip numerous times and I am sure I would not have missed a coin that size at 4 inches. Have fun playing with people! That sounds like fun to me!

The bank did NOT knowingly pass them off as counterfeit. Neither did they suspect them. Basically, they originally offered to exchange expected real currency for real currency, which is ok. The person buying them, KNEW what they were, and the bank sold them contacted him to sell at face value, in good faith.

In the end, it came out they were counterfeit... and frankly, the OP scored and will make his money back if he sells them as such (no law against marked copies).

Personally, I think it'd be a tough sell that someone did something wrong on either end of the stick. It's only when you knowingly do something that there's a problem.

Now... the real problem is that the person coming in and passing them off as real.. did THEY know? Hmmmm. I think they might have! If they could prove that, then they'd have a field day with the Secret Service. :)

Once people at the bank knew the money was counterfeit they were obligated to contact the Secret Service and turn it over to them.

That is very cool.
Could you imagine if they were real, almost as good as this powerball drawing today in Jersey

Personally, where I don't sell any of my finds (although I've never found anything of high value so I can't say I *wouldn't*), I'd be pretty pleased finding one of these coins if they were stamped "copy". I imagine I would experience the roller coaster of emotion of real to fake, but in the end, it would be a neat find.

My bank called me today too, something about insufficient funds?!? :icon_scratch: ;)

Interesting get! :)

My bank also called but the Wife told them they were wrong because she still had checks left.:BangHead:
