I stopped by my parents place briefly on Sunday on my way back to MD, and I decided to get a quick 45 minutes in before it got dark. Right down the road from the house they are putting in a new section of road, so both sides of the old road were tore up.
A bit of history first...I grew up in Kearneysville, WV. In August of 1864, the Confederacy met some Union cavalry and artillery on their way from Leetown to Shepherdstown. The site of this skirmish is right down the street from me.
I wasn't expecting much considering I only had a short time to hunt, but I pulled out the MXT and my first signal was the fired Minie. I figured that was a good sign.
I few holes later and I had 3 Spencer cartridges, my first.
The next hole was a heartbreaker. I got a good signal at only 2 inches and found another Spencer cartridge. I checked the hole again and got another great signal. I checked the hold and found the lead that was once attached. I was so close to finding an intact unfired Spencer cartridge. As you can see in the pic, the brass still contains a black substance (not sure what it is, but definately not soil), and the white corroded material at the top. The subsequent pic you can see the white material at the base of the lead. Now I don't know the setup of a cartridge, so if you guys could tell me what the black and white material is/was

My last find of the night was my best. Lying nearly on the surface was the US Infantry cuff button. This is my first CW era button and boy what a beauty. I didn't realize until I got it home and cleaned it how beautiful it really is. It contains nearly 80% (guess) of the original gold gilt and the shank and full lettering on the back.
Anyway, enjoy the pics.
