My Dad's Penny.... came in a roll of quaters....

My Dad was a theater manager and got this penny in a roll of quarters. He had to take 24 cents out of his own pocket to make the register balance. 24 cents was a lot then... I have his pay check stub from then as well and it was for $2.77 a week..... Have any of you guys ever seen such a penny? How rare is It?

There were many penny or coin holders over the years. Have not seen this particular one though. One of this size was usually on a chain.

Was his paycheck 24 cents short that week?

I know what you mean about small paychecks. When my Dad retired from Western Electric in 1979 they gave him a copy of his first pay stub. It was $12.80 for a 40 hour week, or 32 cents an hour. That was 1937. He of course was drafted during the war but came back to his job after it ended. He died in 2007 at age 91. I really miss him and my Mom. She almost made it to 90 and died in 2012.

The coin itself is only worth a few cents. Looks to be VF/XF but it's a fairly common date. The holder is interesting. I knew a kid when I was young who would get copper washers the right size to hold a cent, and would also fool the vending machines into thinking it was a quarter.

Just took a look. It's a closed back gold toned holder. I don't think it's gold. Has some hot glue type sticky substance on the back and it's a 1901 Indian head
