I read about coin hoards all the time. Yesterday someone in CA found 1 mil pennies stashed away. I was looking for something in my basement and found a coffee can full of pennies. Then another. Also 2 bags full of penny rolls. I stored them there when I moved to this house in 93. They’ve sat there for 30 yrs. Time sure flies! I started going through them. One can has 93 issues that are in mint condition so it has zinc mixed in with older non zinc. Second can had 82 as the newest dates. I opened several rolls and they were put up in the 70s. It’s easy to see when I rolled them. Pull them out and find the ones still bright and check date. I weighed them and it came out to 62 lbs! Doing the math that works out to 6,000 coins. There was one roll of wheats I found with my detector in the 80s.
Now I have to figure out what to do with them. I’ve been buying coins in slabs lately and I’m not real interested in going through 6,000 cents. Ideas welcome!

There as a coin shop in Greenfield which had laid flat thousands of pennies on the floor, and then sealed them with a clear acrylic. It looked amazing and very cool.

Unfortunately, the coin shop closed during covid. Like many shops suffering from lack of foot traffic and other factors.

I thought about burying them in my woods and forgetting about them. A treasure trove for someone in the future. Dig hole and bury and put big rock on top. Hey, Anyone ever look under rocks while hunting treasure? Might have to do that.🤔
I do it !!😁

Sorry Dave, they’re going in the ground! Wouldn’t you like to dig up 6,000 large cents buried before civil war? Maybe my hoard will last that long underground. Would be epic find 150 yrs from now.

I did a test to see how big of a piece of 4” pvc I need. I only had a short piece of pvc to use for test. There are 98 rolls. I loaded them in pipe and it took up 16”. Emptied it and loaded coffee cans. Two cans took up 22”. I need a 38” piece of pvc. The coffee can is metal and from before ‘93 when I stopped collecting these. Cans are plastic now.

I'm wondering what a detector would do/or act like when you hit upon your penny hoard? Say with the cap of pipe buried 12" or so. That would be a interesting test I think.
