In a little over 2 hours:

10 Roman Bronze Coins
1 Roman Fibula
Sixpence 'Love Token' - William III Circa 1697.
bits...

Very pleased with the reverse of the Soldier Spearing Fallen Horseman, its the best example of this type I have found. The mint is unusual as well, Dad will investigate ;D For ploughed land & a 4th Century coin, it beat the odds big time

Yeap, a Sestertius of Antoninus Pius AD138-161

This field we named the 'brooch field', last year I had my record of 13 Roman Brooches (all different types) in 1 day. Forgot how many we had in total from this 1 field but they are all GPSed, so easily checked. It's also where I had one of my nicest:

It was a massive surprise, a thing I had seen in books & thought I had 0 chance of finding in pieces, let alone with a pin attached that still moves :o

Its half of a beer/cider barrel tap, its the end that was hammered into the keg, the tap end is missing. Probably 150 years old.

ID UPDATE:

We knew it was an unusual mint on the nice coin but didn't realise it was unrecorded :o

Here are my Dad's thoughts after his study:

Have gone through RIC and cannot find anything with a GSL? Or CSL?. My inclination is that this is a GSLG (agreed, I can see the top of the G in the photo) as there is a GPLG for Lyons – yet a Secondi (S) officino is not recorded.

So a mystery but Lyons Second part of the mint will have to do for the moment.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

We did also have a Constantius II Fallen Horseman marked GSLG from 'delete' last year in W/W condition – so maybe the RIC Vol VIII does not show S variations only the P.

So RIC VOL VIII 189 type.

Therefore, it seems to come from the second mint of Lyon (France), which is either unrecorded in the books, or not known about at the time they were written. :icon_thumright:
