Finally got out for a short hunt this afternoon. Managed two firsts, an 1860 fattie and a US belt plate. Unfortunately, the site has been flooded by salt water in the past so neither turned out that well. I got the IH soaking in olive oil now, because it was starting to crumble. As for the belt plate, any suggestions on preserving/cleaning it? It has a little patina left, but quite a bit of corrosion from the salt water. I'm thinking olive oil, but not sure. I almost didn't dig it at first as it rang so loud on the T2.

Here are the cleaned pics. I tried a toothpick, but I had to resort to more harsh measures of hydrogen peroxide.

Congrats on some Excellent finds !

Re: My first belt plate and fattie

Any plate is great!! I've used olive oil for years to work through the crust on Ancient Greek and Romain coins.. but for a plate like this, I'm not sure. It looks like you will end up wit lots of uneven patina and migth lose some metal it you work it too much. Maybe google for some of the methods of stabilizing saltwater recoveries, it will take longer but you might end up with a better plate..

Nice finds!!
