So last Friday on my lunch break i hiked up a trail near where I work. I know it used to be a ranch in the 1800's so I thought maybe I'd spend my lunch checking out the area since it is only 5 minutes from where I work. Now, the area that used to be part of a ranch is at the foothills of a mountain range and there are many little trails leading up into the mountains so I decided to hike up a bit and detect along the trail I was on.
The first half hour I had zero hits then I turned around and started my way back down the small path up the mountain I was working. About 50ft from where I turned around I was under a canapy of brush and trees I had already passed once and passed my detecter over a rock the size of a football that was sticking up along side the trail. I got a hit so I stopped and passed it over the rock a couple more times and sure enough, strong signal. So I push the rock with my shovel and it moves easily so I tip it over and move it away from the small hole. I pass the detector over the rock and no signal, I then pass it over the small hole where it came from and sure enough, a strong signal. I begin to dig with my small hand held shovel and uncover the top of a tin can about the size of a small coffee can.
My heart is racing at this point as I discover that the lid is attached to a tin can. I dig around it enough to grasp the side of the can with my fingers and gently slide this 8 inch long can out of the ground. I shake it and hear something inside. Upon oppening the can I find a smaller clear plastic container inside. Now at this point I realize that this is not as old as I was hoping but I actually found something so I am still excited. I twist the lid off the plastic bottle and inside I find 4 8x11 photo copies of someones personal letters with pictures of the person. I noticed at the top of one of them is a note stating the date as 2006 and another notes saying "Hello future me 2011" so I assume this person was coming back for it in 2011. Also inside the container were two large gold charms, a few quarters, dimes nickles and pennies. A keepsake locket and a flyer for some art school.
I had nothing in my pockets to contribute to this cache so I put everything back into the containers, closed it up tightly and reburied it and made it look as if nobody were even there.
Now, I was thinking of going back and inserting a $100 dollar bill for giggles.
Anyway, I think that replacing everything including the "gold" will buy me a few Karma points and look forward to finding the "Old" gold cache i am hoping for...

adding to "The cache!"

GREAT JOB!!

IT'S NICE TO HEAR THERE ARE STILL SOME HONEST PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD!! I HOPE THIS GOOD DEED BRINGS YOU MUCH DESERVED..LOOT AND GOOD LUCK!! WAY TO GO!!!

Thats a GREAT idea! If anyone wants to add to this cache I will be more than happy to add to it. I will take pictures of everything going back into the hole.
If it were me and I dug up my cache and found that it was full of things I hadn;t put in it I would be intrigued beyond belief and what a story that would make.

Anyway, keep in mind that the tin can is only the size of a small coffee can but I guess I could put that can into a larger can if needed. ;D

If you want to add something my email address is: mhansen@guitarcenter.com

I'll be happy to send you my address.

I'll be happy to take a pic for everyone to see as I replace the cache after adding to it.

Thanks. I'm only interested in cache's that I know the owners aren;t coming back for ;).

I didn;t read all the persons personal notes and lettes inside (out of respect for his privacy) but I did see a picture of him holding a guitar so I thought I would throw in some guitar picks and other related items seeing as I work in the music industry. I was trying to figure out a way to get an actual guitar down there for him but it wouldn;t be feasable because the weather would ruin it.

Anyway, I will be heading back up to the site on Friday Feb 29th (so that anyone wanting to add to the cache can send something) to add to it and take pictures. I think I even saw the kids name on the top of one of the papers. He looked to be in his mid teens.

outstanding good for you ;) Guzz1

That really is neat you should take a pic of yourself add a note (maybe no pic) but ask how was art school and add even somethin to go along with the finds, then go back and ck it ever so often!

Super! thanks for the address, I'll put it in the mail today! what fun! sending a 10 phennig (german), 2 Floirin, 2 nickles (1947 and 1956), 1964 $.50, and a bicentenial Dollar coin! ;D

Ya, I am going to get a small memory card and put the story on it and add it as well so he can throw it into his computer and see how his cache grew.

My email is mhansen@guitarcenter.com is anyone else want to add anything. I'm going to take my address down so if you want to add something drop me an email and I;ll give my address to you. :)

That's pretty cool. You should reference the web site...maybe even create him a login and put it with password in the cache, so in 2011 he can find all the goodies and log in here and see what's been going on for the last few years... lol

Great stuff!!!

i was thinking the same thing about putting in a note telling how you came across the cache and a list of items you put in for him......BUT if you just want to blow his mind......put in a few 2008 coins........since he buried it in 2006 he would blow a fuse trying to figure that out lol

I'd recommened a treasure map leading to another cache maybe 2 or more just to drive em nuts, Now thated be funny

What a neat story and a great idea!

I agree with Marty about adding your own note,
maybe some type of a hello from the past,
accompanied by a photo of you digging up his time capsule,
or something like that,
It would definitely blow his mind and send him for a loop in 2011..
That's of course if the world hasn't already ended by then........ Jeez....

The fact that you didn't take the time capsule only shows true honesty...you definately earned some brownie points...and our respect. Congrats for being tasteful

Yess!! That's awesome! Good work man; this is what I like, pure creativity... It's gonna be sooo fun for the guy. Be sure to leave him a way to get to all this. Awesome!
